Last surviving veteran of First World War dies... →
Inevitable, but sad. Wars always shape the world after them, but the impact of World War I was incredibly far-reaching. From Hemingway to chemical warfare to the Middle East to German reparation, much of the last century was shaped through the outcome of the war.  Mrs. Green was the last living connection to that war, and now that era is passed completely.

Me: Here's something gross
Me: remember my pinky toe getting smashed?
Ti: yes......
Me: the nail just came off
Me: but there was a new nail underneath it
Me: I don't think I've ever lost a toenail before
Ti: there was a new one under it?
Me: I was surprised to find one underneath it
Me: yeah, smaller, but there
Me: maybe I'm like a shark

An email to Tumblr support
Dear Tumblr staff, I am an active member of the Tumblr community and have been a member since November of 2007. I spend the vast majority of my time in the dashboard, as I know many of the users I interact with do. For the last six months or so I have been using the “missing e” extension made by Jeremy Cutler. I find that it adds a number of features that make reading the dashboard a...

“There’s more genetic diversity within Africa than between Africans and others.”
– Thandie Newton at TEDGlobal (via curiositycounts) What does that even mean? (via indefensible) Yeah, that would be some first class science speak right there. What he’s saying from a scientific point of view is this: Say you take a sample of 1,000 Africans from all across the continent...

jamiek: Sometimes you hear about a guy who everyone in your office knew who died this weekend at age 50 from liver failure. Then you start thinking about your liver enzymes and how they’re still consistently elevated. Then you start dreading dying at age 50—that’s so young. Then you start wondering about your funeral. Then you decide that’s too morbid. Then you think about your recent...

–  Kind of Bloop album postered on Jay Maisel’s building That’s the quote from the people who did the postering. Look, even if you think Maisel was wrong, that it was fair use, etc., the idea of one person asserting his rights is not evil. I think our copyright system is broken, as well, but the...

100 Reasons NOT to Go to Graduate School →
rosieloveswords: thedisgruntledgradstudent: OH LOOK. Another jackass jumping on the “Let’s shit on Academia” train without providing any more useless, helpful or even witty observation about the system and what is or isn’t wrong with it. Jesus Christ, asshole, GTFO. There are a lot of reasons not to go to graduate school. Lack of drive, passion, desire, will power. This ridiculous list...

No. No. It is wrong and unjust and just NOT RIGHT to put commas outside quotation marks. Just thinking about it makes me break out in hives. I’m taking Jack’s side in the war against Nick Douglas and awkwardly...
