I don’t know - the argument is interesting, but I don’t think that outcome is terribly likely. I think that it’s certainly true that America has been far too slow in moving to alternative fuels, but I think that, from a purely economical stand-point it was the short-term rational move. That said, the government could have and should have stepped in to change the calculus, but they felt it was politically non-viable.
If I understand correctly, his thesis is that oil prices will rise too rapidly for us to change over to alternative fuels before having severe economic repercussions, which will leave us too poor to make the switch at all. But, with a national focus (not as strong or as sharp as it could be, no doubt) already on alternative fuels, isn’t it possible that we can reduce our consumption, bringing down demand (and therefore cost) in the short-term facilitating the transition?
Just my thoughts - who knows how much sense it makes
