Every penny of Americans’ nearly $1 trillion in revolving debt started with someone — some individual person — whipping out a piece of plastic and making a decision to use it.
I really want consumer credit issues to be the fault of the seriously skeevy banks that do the lending and their predatory practices. And to some extent, I think that’s right - they go out of their way to make an extra dollar on the back of human suffering (let’s set aside the arguments about whether they have an obligation to shareholders to do so). But a lot of us are just BAD at using credit. There are any number of reasons why, but I think some of the solutions at the end of this article could be helpful.
