I don’t understand all the @replies butt-hurt. Click the Replies link. See all replies. Is there something I’m missing?

(I tried to fit this into the answers box, but it’s too long)
I’ve found a ton of people to follow from @replies to them from people I already followed. Now I don’t have the option to see those replies no matter what, even though I know what I’m getting in to.
I understand Twitter didn’t want to overwhelm new people with lots of out of context @replies, but the setting was turned off by default. Wouldn’t a disclaimer like “Don’t do this unless you KNOW you want to because …” be better than just removing the option?
I think how Twitter handles this will be interesting to watch, because it’s not a one-off type of problem. As more people (and less tech-savvy) people join they’re going to have to make changes. And some of those will inevitably upset some die-hard users that loved the thing that has now been changed. So you have to make a decision - do you focus more on the newer people with probably less connection to the service but who are way bigger numerically? Or do you focus on the more committed users who are fewer but much more invested? I think there is a happy medium for almost any problem you can come across, but we’ll just have to wait and see how they solve them.
As for this particular problem, I still don’t see why this has to be an all-or-nothing thing. Why can’t it still be an option, but one that is made to be very difficult to do accidentally? That way I could still use twitter the way I prefer but users who don’t want to se extraneous @replies don’t have to.
