My coworker just informed me that her gmail inbox is out of control. She let me come over and filter her facebook emails, and just the sight of her inbox alone almost gave me a heart attack.
I recently moved a friend of mine to gmail - she had thousands and thousands of emails in just her inbox, with a CRAZY folder structure, spam everywhere. After I got her migrated there were still maybe 3k emails in her inbox, so I finally explained it to her this way: It’s google. They do search well. Let’s archive everything that’s older than a week and if you need it, search for it. She was amazed to have email search that actually found things. It’s not the absolute best way to handle things, but it gets rid of that pressure in your chest that comes from that insurmountable pile of email.
