Pope Benedict XVI encyclical letter denounces excessive zeal for assertions of intellectual property rights in knowledge
I will bet quite a lot of money the pope and I don’t agree on very many things, but he’s right about this:
On the part of rich countries there is excessive zeal for protecting knowledge through an unduly rigid assertion of the right to intellectual property, especially in the field of health care.
That’s an important point, and while it isn’t the biggest problem facing American health care, intellectual property and patents hinder access to medical breakthroughs not just to the developing world but to Americans as well. I doubt we’ll see this on the radar in the upcoming health care debate, though.
