agree to disagree
I’m fighting my mother’s attempt to guilt me.
I told her we need to agree to disagree.
I’m taking Maxx to a Vet specialist tomorrow for an intestinal endoscopy. It will cost $800-$1200. Despite my lack of money I feel it’s important to do this and that Maxx is totally worth it. When I adopted him I accepted the responsibility to care for him regardless of the costs monetarily and emotionally.
My mother on the other hand believes that anything over $600 is too much to spend on a cat. “It’s just an animal,” she said. She also told me that if any of her cats needed a procedure that cost that much she would have the cat put down instead, even if the condition potentially diagnosed wasn’t terminal.
I can’t do that. I. just. can’t.
I’m familiar with this. Farm mentality vs. pet mentality, at least in my family. We each have to choose our own priorities. I’m with you. If I’m able to pay for it, I will.
Same here. I will do everything I can to help my cats be healthy, as long as their quality of life is good.
Check into CareCredit. It’s a credit card for pet care that involves no interest for a specific number of months as well as monthly payment plans. Sometimes, a pet owner just needs a little financial breathing room.
The website is www.carecredit.com. Check it out and see if it might be helpful.
Some people think I’m absolutely insane to give my cat insulin.
“Twice a day??” they often ask in astonishment, and I assure them that it’s mostly not that bad.
There are all kinds of pet owners who subscribe to different beliefs when it comes to an animal’s health. I generally fall on the end of “I will do what it takes,” but a lot of people aren’t really like that.
Quite honestly though, I don’t make these decisions with a dedicated fervor to doing whatever it takes. I question the decisions and weigh the options. I talk to multiple vets and other people who have experienced the same things. I weigh my options, just as I do for my own medical procedures.
I do reach moments when I wonder if I can take being bound to my house twice a day to give George his medicine. I wonder how I can deal with it at times like, well, right now when I have to be parted from him in order to ensure that he does get his insulin while I’m out of town.
No matter what though, I love that miserable cat, and I’m pretty sure that he loves me. He’s worth that expense to me, even if it means I have to scale back my own budget in order to buy his insulin. It’s ultimately worth it when I have to schedule classes and social events around his injection times.
It’s worth it. Every penny.
It’s such a hard thing to know what the right thing to do for a pet is. I’ve written before about my experience with a sick cat, but from the very beginning I knew I had to do whatever I needed to to make her well. It wasn’t possible, but even though taking care of her was very expensive, I felt so much better knowing I took as good care of her as I could for the time she was with me. If I hadn’t done so much, I don’t know that I would have felt guilty, necessarily, but I wouldn’t have gotten the joy I did from her.
