Tomorrow I start my new job
It’s my first “gown-up” job, one that’s on a path to a career. I’ve had a “real” job before, but I wasn’t really expected to know very much when I started, I never had too much responsibility, and I went into it knowing it would be something I did while I figured out grad school. I started that job almost eight years ago and the last six years I’ve spent in grad school.
Grad school is a lot of work, but for the most part it’s a lot of work on whatever schedule works for you. For me over the last year that’s meant to bed at between 2 and 5am and up between noon and 2pm. I like sleeping late, and I work pretty well late into the night.
I don’t have that luxury anymore, though. While the schedule is a little flexible, they start at 8 or 8:30 and end at 4:30 or 5. Factor in a 45 minute commute (well, that’s my guess - I haven’t actually DONE the commute yet, so I guess I’ll just have to wait and see), and I’m waking up at 6ish to shower and get ready. If I want to work out it’ll be earlier still. The first few days will be fine - I’ll be hyped up, so I’ll be awake with no problem. But I’m thinking it’ll be difficult after that. Do any former night owls have tips on transitioning to daylight hours?

Starting three weeks before you have to wake up earlier — wait, did you say tomorrow? Totally screwed. Anyway, good luck!

when i had a 5:30 a.m. job i would sometimes sleep in two phases: once for a few hours when i got home, then the other in the wee hours.
