A Zen student sat in meditation day and night. His master asked him, “Why do you sit so hard?” The student replied “So I can become a Buddha.” At this the master picked up a tile and began polishing it with a rock. The student asked, “What are you doing, Master?”, and the master said, “Polishing this tile to make a mirror.” The student asked, “How can polishing a tile make it a mirror?” The master replied “How can sitting make you a Buddha?”
