Another day, another citizen killed by a police Taser
(via azspot)
By protocol, the taser is only supposed to be used in extreme cases - a case where you WOULD use your weapon but instead you have this useful little device that has the ability to stop someone but not kill them. Instead it’s used to “subdue” people, even when no real force is necessary at all. This proliferation of taser use is what lead to the BART officer murdering a suspect in cold blood (a side note - I’m willing to bet he’ll be convicted of manslaughter or some similar, lesser crime, but shouldn’t we be holding police to a higher standard here?)
Police brutality and excessive force aren’t going anywhere (and you need just look at some of the types of people who become cops to understand why), but this is something we can DO something about. DAs should investigate every taser use like they do handgun discharges, requiring the same standard before they’re use. Too bad we don’t have the will to do that.
