It turns out that this is just something they do over there - modern cemeteries there have plots of ground that have little cement walls around them and gravel or some other material spread over the ground. The headstone is at the top and there are often these little religious icons or flowers (or both) in orbs. Apparently it’s more permanent than the simple flowers we put on graves in the U.S. (and, actually, a Jewish friend of mine once told me that it was Jewish tradition to place pebbles on the headstone of a grave because of their permanence). We definitely saw graves with lots of different colored stones put down, but I cant seem to find any pictures. I’m kind of surprised by that, because we definitely thought it was an odd tradition.
