Obligatory Watchmen Review
Writing one of these without seeming like a cheerleader or a whiny ass titty baby is tough, so I’ll start with this: I liked the movie quite a bit, the story is engrossing and detailed (although necessarily not as much as the graphic novel). I tend to agree that Snyder was over-attached to the source material and it might’ve been nice to see what a little re-imagining could’ve done to the story, but the plus side is that it has none of the gaping motivational holes that so many film adaptations have (why on earth would he DO that!?).
I thought the Billy Crudup’s voice was perfect for Dr. Manhattan, it’s very soft, which makes a nice contrast. And I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Malin Akerman in anything before (pause to check IMDB - nope never seen a single thing from that list…), but I definitely want to see her again. Her voice reminds me very strongly of Drew Barrymore, and I really enjoyed it. And just wow is she hot! Having read the graphic novel I was expecting the glowing blue penis, but the Realistic Jiggle MotionTM was perhaps a bit much, no?
Probably the biggest novel contribution Snyder had to make was the background music, which was not always inspired but usually a good fit (notable exception - Hallelujah during Nite Owl & Silk Spectre’s love scene, c’mon hasn’t that been done to death?). Overall, I liked it, I’ll probably see it another time, and I’d give it maybe 3.75 out of 5.
