Wars always shape the world after them, but the impact of World War I was incredibly far-reaching. From Hemingway to chemical warfare to the Middle East to German reparation, much of the last century was shaped through the outcome of the war. Mrs. Green was the last living connection to that war, and now that era is passed completely.

jamiek:

Christmas of 1996 - my brother and I had just turned 17 and had gotten our licenses about 6 months before. We needed wheels. We couldn’t afford anything, though, and my father had been driving his 1986 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale since it was new. Which is most definitely no longer was.

An uncle had a third car, though (one he bought after his 70s vintage Duster died - that car is a whole other set of stories). A 1987 Oldsmobile Calais coupe. In pink. (Light Rosewood was I believe the formal name for the color). It met an unfortunate end (actually not far off from the car pictured here, which, I need to emphasize, is the exact same color).

That car was a piece of crap from day one. Given for free it cost $1400 to get it to run, pass inspection, and stop and the fuel pump went almost immediately after that work had been done. The ECM fuse once blew while waiting to make a left turn across three lanes of traffic (and we were lucky it went then - the turn was up a steep hill, and even if we had rolled back through the main road without being hit and killed there was a 15 or 20 foot drop on the other side of that). The brakes would lock up if you even thought about braking hard. At one point the radio antenna was in the passenger seat footwell propping the glovebox closed (prior to that the glovebox would pop open at moderate bumps, requiring the driver to reach over and pull on the handle to open the latch so it could be closed again).

It was a terrible car. And worse, it wasn’t even mine, since I had to share it with Jamie. But as I was looking for this picture and I came across the auction for this car, I thought far harder than I would have expected about submitting a bid.

An email to Tumblr support

Dear Tumblr staff,

I am an active member of the Tumblr community and have been a member since November of 2007. I spend the vast majority of my time in the dashboard, as I know many of the users I interact with do. For the last six months or so I have been using the “missing e” extension made by Jeremy Cutler. I find that it adds a number of features that make reading the dashboard a more pleasant experience, and offers features that I value but that the majority of the tumblr community may not care about.

When Jeremy first mentioned that he had been asked to stop distributing missing e, I was concerned. I know that Tumblr must protect its service and that restrictions on the use of the API and content are a part of this. I was hopeful, however, that an agreement could be reached. A few weeks ago it seemed that it had and a new version of missing e that no longer used the tumblr API was released.

Today I learned that Tumblr is asking Jeremy to halt all distribution of missing e and has said they will delete his account if he does not comply. I cannot put into words how childish, spiteful, and wrongheaded I think this action is. I would like to think that you have the best interests of the tumblr community at heart, but these actions are definitely not consistent with that goal.

Jeremy is an independent developer who put together these scripts into a browser extension because he wanted some features that Tumblr does not provide. He does not sell the extension but rather provides it for free. Others have begun using it because they see the utility of the extension as well. The fact that Tumblr would try to stop a person who is trying to improve their service is completely baffling.

I would ask and urge you to reconsider this course of action. Your respect for the community that supports Tumblr is of paramount importance to the further success of the platform. To threaten a community member who is so committed to the platform that he has spent his own time developing an improvement is so short-sighted that I cannot see what possible benefits would accrue to the Tumblr community or to Tumblr as a company from this approach. You no doubt have the legal right and the ability to take this action, but that does not make it the best thing to do, and in this case, I am sure it is not.
